Cat Opera Lyrics

Cat Opera

Tip-a-tip-a-tip-a-toe (3x) Meow Meow
Behind the buildings where the trash cans live
There comes a noise no one is happy with
Animal ecstasy, naked ferocity of the jungle kind
Not of the conscious mind.
People throw shoes run get the water hose.
Watch out when Spunky does her splay-foot pose.
There’ll be loving all right. There’ll be fussing & fighting all night long
Thousands of years-old songs
Cat Opera- worse than a bad violin, or 2 or 3
Cat Opera- soon they’ll be guilty as sin, or up a tree, or in captivity
…& that would not sit right with this freedom-loving species.
You think it’s bad right now, think how bad it could be.

If the alley cats of the world unite they can televise their songs & fights.
Make sure the footage is raw, make money hand over paw & sell the rights.
Jaguars & Tigers tonight!
When the star cats work in Tokyo they’ll remember back in Kokomo
Everything same as it was, but now every super-puss has an entourage
The better to sharpen their claws.
Cat Opera- worse than a bad violin & etc.
We like to help out all our animal friends.
That seems to be what Mother Nature intends
Scratching each other’s backs, grinding each other’s axes & warming beds
Just like it’s always been.
Cat opera & etc

Hell Of A Drive

By the time we pulled out of Pulaski the snow piled right up to the sky.
Buildings & phone poles stuck out of the plow drifts
high as an elephant’s eye.
Out on the Interstate tunnel through snowfall maybe a lane and a half wide
Then north on 11, the old U.S. Highway
to Potsdam’s a hell of a drive.
Hell of a drive when the lake effect off of Ontario buries this country alive.
Hell of a drive but we got to keep going or be part of the countryside.

Damn near white-out on the road to somewhere
once upon a time
You won’t know till you get there if your love survives.
The crystal clear of focus- you’ve been seldom so alive
You feel the curtain lifting that was one hell of a ride!

Bill Mazeroski went deep off Ralph Terry & the Bucs beat the Yanks ten to nine.
Whitey Ford’s shutouts & Mantle & Maris went missing in the final headlines.
Hal Smith & Yogi hit homers but nobody sings out their names at this time.
The ’60 World Series went 4-3 to Pittsburgh when Maz hit a hell of a drive.
Hell of a drive, like when The Babe called the shot off the Cubbies,
Or Carter off Wild Thing that time.
Hell of a drive getting home to your loved ones
How did you ever survive?
Damn near white-out & etc
